This Is Why You Wake Up With Sore Neck And Shoulders

Falling asleep with your arms in a bad position or sleeping on your stomach are major causes of morning soreness in the neck and shoulders. If you sleep with your arms over your head, you may be overextending the muscles and ligaments, which can lead to damaging them. Sleeping on your stomach, no matter how comforting it seems as you drift off, twists your neck into an awkward position and pulls at the shoulders, too.

Find a relaxed position to fall asleep, one that doesn’t place strain on any part of your body but especially not on your upper body. You’ll find that you experience a much more enjoyable morning with a great deal less discomfort if you are fully relaxed.

Exercise Gone Wrong

Working out is commendable, and you should continue to do so. But if you are experiencing an intense amount of soreness the day after you workout your shoulders and upper back (particularly trapezoids), you may not be preparing properly for your workout. Be sure to include a warm-up in your routine. It’s essential to make sure your muscles and tendons aren’t being damaged because you’re throwing too much weight and strain on them without a good warm-up routine.

While these are the most common causes of neck and shoulder pain upon waking, you might also be experiencing symptoms of misalignment caused by an injury, or by something as simple as a poorly constructed workstation. Try to create a more ergonomic place to work during the day, which will prevent further discomfort during sleep. If the suggestions above don’t seem to remedy your soreness, you may want to consult with a physician to see if you have a more permanent injury.
