Tag Heuer: Formula 1 McLaren Limited Edition
In celebrating the 30-year partnership between Tag Heuer and the McLaren Formula One race team, the Manufacture released the Formula 1 McLaren Limited Edition. Its bold, undeniably motorsport-inspired design is immediately obvious if not by the tachymeter, then by its distinct red colour scheme.
The red is not just any red – Tag Heuer has named it ‘rocket red’, and is inspired by McLaren’s 1985 campaign. This historic hue is found on the aluminium tachymeter bezel which proudly bears the marque’s name along the first 15 seconds. The 42-millimetre diameter brushed 316L steel case features a opaline black dial, and all hands tipped with rocket red save for the central hours and minutes. The red is hinted at the 12 o’clock position of the running track and the 30 mark, reiterating the auspicious anniversary. The only Arabic numeral on the main dial is the oversized 12 while the others are baton indices – all of which are coated with Super-LumiNova.
As expected of a watch inspired by and made for motorsport, the Ronda 5040D quartz movement is used to ensure perfect timekeeping. This is shown in the small subdial at the 6 o’clock position which measures the chronograph time down to 1/10th of a second. At the 9 o’clock is the chronograph minutes and the small seconds is shown at the 3 o’clock, located just above the date aperture at the 4 o’clock.
The timepiece is completed with a NATO strap that is in red and black to echo the colours of the dial. The highly resistant material further emphasises the sporty inspiration of the timepiece, and is secured with a buckle and pin in the same 316L steel of the case.
